Sinister Review

Hello again, my creepies!

So in the midst of all of life's craziness, I was called to a friend's house to hang out and watch a movie. You'll have to read the review what I thought of said movie, which was Sinister (2012).

Here I was, sitting on the mattress-made-couch in my friend's living room. We sat around eating dumplings and hot-and-sour soup and joking about our high school experiences from the past, when my friend perked up and said "hey, I have Sinister on Bluray and I haven't cracked it open yet, anyone want to watch?"
There was an excited "YES!" from everyone in the room, aside from myself, who sat indifferent. I'd heard of Sinister, don't get me wrong. I knew that it existed. I just hadn't gotten around to watching it and I had NO idea what it was about.

And so we watched.

The opening scene- a family being hung from a tree. Alright, disturbing. But way to try to reel me in with some cheap thrills, Sinister.

One hour in. I was begging them to turn it off. Was I bored? No. Was I unhappy with the storyline? No.
I was so terrified of the death scenes that I had my hands over my eyes to distract myself from the horror that was happening. There's just something about watching a family get drowned to death in their own pool while strapped to their lounge chairs (and watching their feet twitch as they try to escape) that made me lose it. Maybe it was the music.
It freaks me out every single time. It's horrible. I've always known music has a huge impact on how a film flows, but I never thought that it would disturb me this much. (This was when I started saying "Okay, do you guys want to do something else now?")

But alas, I made it to the end of the film. My body felt like an overcooked noodle. Mentally, I was shot. Every sound around me made me jump out of my skin. It made me despise children.
So it did its job.

For those of you that have never seen Sinister, I rate it as one of the top 5 scariest horror films I've ever watched. The story is realistic, brutal, and it makes you hope that you don't have any kids living in your house.
Mr. Boogie, or Buhguul, isn't nearly as involved as I wish he was, though the sequel looks like it's going to involve him much more (and it comes out in August, you guys! Yay!) but he's still scary. I like that he's not the center of attention- the weird looking antagonist doesn't steal the show, but what Ellison (the main protagonist) is going through takes the main stage, and everything going on around him is like a well-orchestrated horror choreography of terrifying, gory, horribleness.

If I was going to rate this film out of 10, I give it a 9.5. I wanted to be scared by a horror movie, and it totally delivered. I am SO HAPPY I finally got around to watching this film. So many thumbs up.

Until next time, spooks,

The Bay (2012) Review

So I know I said I wasn't going to do so many reviews, but this film ruined my life (in a good way because it was terrifying) so I wanted you all to know about it.

There are plenty of things in the world that are absolutely horrifying. You know, like spiders, clowns, blood, feet…to each their own! Now, here’s the point of the former sentence: not everyone is scared of these things.
Something that everyone SHOULD be afraid of? Your local government poisoning your water with chicken poop, then you drink it and turn into a boil-covered, creepy mess of blood and guts falling out of you because a parasite invaded your body and ate your organs from the inside out.
If you’re not scared of that, I’m pretty sure you’re a liar. Or, I’m going to have to hang out with you. You’re going to help me survive the zombie apocalypse.

But The Bay (2012) tells the story of a small town in Maryland where a parasitic outbreak compromises the water, and the health of everyone in town.
It’s a found-footage film, which is normally not the type of film I enjoy. I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this in past posts, because I have a problem believing that it’s “found-footage” because I know I’m watching a film. I don’t know, maybe that’s just a weird issue that only I have- I just feel like I know deep down that it’s fake and I’m never able to get into it.

But halfway through this film, I had my boyfriend nudging me to make sure that I was okay because he could tell that my anxiety level was through the roof.
If you all want to know my biggest fear, here it is: contagious diseases that have no cure. Anything that could contribute to zombies walking the earth, like an illness that would make you want to eat someone’s flesh. Don’t talk to me about it. It makes me so nervous.
I think it’s pretty reasonable, considering it could happen.

As the film develops, you begin to follow three different (yet equally important) people. (There are more than these three stories, however these were the three that caught my interest the most). One is an inexperienced news reporter who has decided to document the July 4th festivities of Chesapeake Bay, another is a teenage girl who is trying to FaceTime with her friend to explain to her that something is going horribly wrong in her hometown. And last but not least is the doctor who is dealing with the patients that are arriving (waves at a time) into his emergency room.

These poor people become the only people left around when the parasite begins eating away at everyone in the town. They watch people they know get torn apart from the inside out, kill themselves to escape their inevitable fate…honestly the film is horrific. I had a really, really hard time watching it; my stomach was in knots (both because of the tension and because of the gross gory scenes that were just all-around disgusting) and I decided I never want to drink unfiltered water again.
While I’m sure that I’ll get over my fear of tap water, I don’t know if I’ll be able to get over my fear of crazy parasites running rampant around my town, considering I think it’s something that’s plausible…maybe it’s totally irrational.
Back me up here, guys.

I don’t know if I’d ever rewatch this film just because I didn’t like the shakiness of the found-footage aspect of the film, but other than that, this one is probably one of the creepiest horror films I’ve seen in a while.
My advice to all of you if you feel like you haven’t seen a good scary movie in a while: watch this one, or find a film that targets exactly what you’re afraid of. It’ll work (almost) ever time.

Until next time, my creepy crawlers!

Unfriended Review

In honor of Unfriended coming out this weekend (one of the most talked about horror films in a LONG time), I was sent to go see it a little early! I got to see it a week ago today, so I wanted to give you guys a quick (very vague) review of the film. I don't want to give anything away other than my personal opinion, because this is a film that I truly believe all kinds of horror fans will appreciate. It has a message that I feel most films have been lacking.
If you haven't heard of Unfriended, here's a trailer (and let me just tell you, it does the film NO JUSTICE. DO NOT JUDGE THE FILM BY THE TRAILER.):
I know how it sounds, guys.  It sounds like you’re going to be watching someone’s Skype conversation for 2 hours.  Well, you do.  But in the midst of that, so much goes on that is really never touched upon in the trailers.  (To be honest, the trailer makes the film look awful).  But the film has heart, and a message that’s worth watching for anyone and everyone who has ever made fun of someone: the truth will always come back to hurt you.

I really don’t want to give too much away, because I know how skeptical people are about this film, and I believe everyone should really see it for themselves.  What I can tell you, is that I’m the kind of horror fan that normally can’t stand the films that come out now because they use jump scares over true horror.  Sure, Unfriended has plenty of jump scares.  They’re something I don’t do well with, and I jump every time, and it’s really embarrassing…I guess that’s the point, huh?  But over that, the film has something I didn’t expect: a decent amount of humor.  The film doesn’t hesitate to make fun of itself, and it makes it so much more enjoyable to watch knowing that it wasn’t taken too seriously.  Most of the theater was giggling while watching Blaire type over text or Facebook… something I will give away, is you will definitely be saying “girl, you need lessons in how to send a Facebook message.” It’s awful to watch her try to compose one, and it makes it hilarious.

Is this film gory? Not really.  Is it violent? Absolutely.  Do things happen that you probably wouldn’t expect from a film about Skype and Facebook?  Oh, yes.  There are deaths you probably wouldn’t expect from this kind of film, one of which had me almost cover my eyes, and I don’t really get disturbed by much.  But the deaths are very real; things you probably haven’t seen before.  I would compare them to Final Destination: they’re real in the sense that the deaths come from real things.  It’s hard to explain, but in the same way someone could die in a tanning bed, someone can die straightening their hair…I’ll leave it there so I don’t give too much away.

I really implore you guys to go into this film with an open mind. I also implore you to not read any reviews (besides mine of course...) because I feel like a lot of people won't appreciate the message this film has to offer.

I would LOVE to hear all of your opinions of the film. Shoot me a comment and I'll be super excited to hear from you!

It Follows Review

Seeing It Follows came to me spontaneously...my plan was to go to work, and then go straight home and go to sleep. However, my friend texted me asking if I had any interest in seeing it, and considering it's received reviews such as "the scariest horror film in decades", I figured it would be in my best interest to go see it.

Basically, if you haven't seen it yet and you want to know the synopsis, I feel like this whole film is an innuendo about STDs...I could be totally off but that's the way it seems to me.
A girl sleeps with a guy she kind of just met, and contracts something he eludes to as "the following". Anyone who contracts it from someone essentially sees people walking at them. Yes, very odd-looking people, walking slowly at them. They stare, and for some reason, they're unnecessarily naked, because most of this film is overly sexualized.
So, the only way to "get rid of it", is to pass it on to someone else the same way you contracted it. By sleeping with someone.

Anyway, like I said before, the film is overly sexualized, like someone was trying to make a horror-porn. Most of the "followers", I guess I'll call them, are walking around with their shirts cut too low...or their robe is open...or they're not wearing a shirt at all. There's an ample showing of breasts in this film, if that's something you need in your horror. Personally, I'd prefer to be scared than have to be entertained by naked women. That also happens. Women are completely naked.
And it's not just limited to women- you have a naked man standing on a roof, as well. -sigh-

The acting was wonderful. I really enjoyed the cast; they seemed to fit their roles very well. That part was not a disappointment for me at all.

The story was terrifying in concept, but in execution, I think it lacked something. It wasn't extravagant and in-your-face the way some films are, but there were jump-scares in place of where real terror and suspense could have been. I don't know, maybe it's just me, and maybe I'm jaded by horror films by now. I sure hope not...

So for those of you looking to go see a different kind of horror film, this one is definitely worth checking out. I'd like to hear opinions on it, because I know my friend and I were both pretty disappointed, but many people are saying that they were totally terrified by it.

Let me know what you guys thought!!

Nightlight Review

What scares you the most? Killer clowns? Serial killers? Or perhaps what lurks in the dark?
"Nightlight" delves into what happens when a group of friends travels into the woods after a classmate commits suicide there, to play what they call "flashlight games". But are they really just playing a game? Or is there something in the woods with them, watching their every move? More importantly, will it let them leave?

I am terrified of the dark. It's something I don't like to admit as a horror fan, because it seems a little silly...how does someone that loves blood and gore and all things horror-related not like the dark? There's just something about not being able to see what could be on any side of you that makes my skin crawl. I know I'm not the only one, you can all stop lying...okay, maybe I'm just a big baby.

Here’s my own personal review of the film:

Nightlight was a film that literally played on my exact worst fear: being unaware of what is skulking in the shadows. I'm normally wary of found-footage-type films because I typically find them to be cheesy, but this concept was different- the film is seen through the point-of-view of a flashlight. What the flashlight is pointed at is what you see, so it's like you're seeing exactly what each character is seeing. Well, that means you can't see what's behind you, and when you're in the woods late at night when everyone told you not to go there, you can only assume some crazy, scary stuff is going to happen.
The character dynamic is really fun, because it's realistic. There's the "nerdy girl" Robin (Shelby Young), trying to fit in with the group of popular kids. There's Nia (Chloe Bridges), the beautiful, popular girl winning everyone's attention, there's Amelia (Taylor Ashley Murphy), the best friend of the popular girl who does her best to let her personality shine through, but is overshadowed by her friend, Ben (Mitch Hewer), the beautiful love interest of just about everyone, and Chris (Carter Jenkins), who is the jokester of the group. It's the exact group of people we see in our everyday lives. You find yourself rooting for the underdog, Robin, to rise up and overcome all of the obstacles the group faces while they're in the deep, dark woods...

Now, if your fear is the dark, you've got it. If your fear is being attacked by a wild animal, you've got it. If you have a fear of paranormal entities and demons, it's here. This film touches on some of the most terrifying things that people claim to experience all of the time. That's what makes it feel so real and relatable.
It's got jump-scares galore; I'm not going to lie, I jumped out of my skin a few times. The suspense, as well, is plentiful and intense. There were many times that I was gripping my blanket, yelling "no, no, no!" The anticipation of what's going to come out of the dark is enough to make your head spin, but what actually comes at you...that's where the true terror is. It's stuff of nightmares, you guys. I'm telling you.
This is going to be a tough film to top in 2015, considering there are so many different kinds of fear involved, plus that brand new perspective.

I would absolutely recommend you give this film a watch. The trailer is creepy in itself, but the film as a whole is well-done, and definitely scary.

MonsterMania: One of the Best Experiences Ever!

So I got back from MonsterMania Convention on Saturday morning. Let me just tell you guys, if you're a horror fan and you've never been to a horror convention...you need to go. MonsterMania is the perfect example of a place where first-timers can go, and where seasoned con-goers can go, and everyone is harmonious and lovey and everyone talks about gore and creepy things. It's the most magical experience.
I wish I would have went for the entire weekend, but I only went on Friday. I went to Bizarre AC last year, and I was exhausted after just one day, so I told myself I would go to MonsterMania, do what I went there to do (meet John Carroll Lynch, aka Twisty the Clown from American Horror Story: Freakshow!) and then head home.
Well, I regret that completely. It was one of the most fun days of my life, full of adrenaline, creepy things, and lots of laughs, smiles, and amazing people.

First of all, let me just tell you, the vendors there were amazing. I told myself I would grab a quick few things to add to my collection (and walking into the first room of vendors, I found Full Moon Features and ended up going crazy with Puppet Master stuff...) but that didn't work out so well. I got some of the COOLEST stuff to add to my collection:
Don't mind the Arnold Palmer and keys in the background...
I grabbed a Captain Spaulding Funko Pop! vinyl figure; I'd had my eye on him for a while because I collect the horror Pops, but at my comic book store they usually sell them for around $12, and this vendor was selling him for $10...I decided I was never going to find him for a better price unless he was damaged, so I went for it.
Full Moon Features was where I really went crazy. My other half bought those babies for me, but I'm so grateful! Puppet Master is how our relationship started 2 years ago; our third or fourth date was him at my house watching B-horror films, and Puppet Master was on one of the compilation DVDs I had bought at my friend's house in New Hampshire, so we watched it...and now we have a collection of all of the figures of the puppets! The two large boxes in the middle are resin statues of two of our favorite puppets: Six Shooter and Tunneler. They're beautiful figures, and they fit perfectly on my Puppet Master shelf!
Skinless Julia from Hellraiser is all the way at the right. She's another figure I had been searching for at a good price, but she's kind of rare around me, so I was going to resort to buying her on Ebay until the vendor gave her to me at a MUCH better price than I expected! I am elated about this one!
The Twisty the Clown print on the far left above Captain Spaulding is 1 of 8 made, if I'm not mistaken. I saw him and fell in love and nabbed him before all of them were gone. He's all hand-painted!
I also got a Hellraiser hoodie (IT SAYS "WE'LL TEAR YOUR SOUL APART" ON THE SLEEVE. HOW SWEET IS THAT?!?!) and a poster of Sam from Trick 'r Treat that's currently still in the plastic so it doesn't get damaged. I have to go out and get a frame!

But what made the weekend so incredible for me?
Oh, I don't know...THIS:
That's John Carroll Lynch, the actor behind Twisty the Clown! I panicked when I met him...I was trying to tell him all about you guys and my little horror family and I totally blanked and got nervous and couldn't do much but stare at him. Talk about starstruck...oops!
He's the sweetest man in the world. It was his first convention so I talked to him a little bit about that. I was telling him about Bizarre AC and how if he ever needed some recommendations of good conventions to go to, I could help him. -facepalm- I walked away kicking myself for sounding like an idiot, but I was so grateful that he signed my Twisty doll.

I spent a lot of time walking around and looking at peoples' costumes throughout the day, and there were some awesome Freddy Krueger costumes, Jason costumes, and there were some great replicas of Victor Crowley there to see Adam Green!
I sadly didn't stay to get to see the live performance of Rocky Horror (where Naomi Grossman got on stage and danced to The Name Game from AHS: Asylum!), and I didn't stay to see any of the movies screening. I was a big baby and went to bed.

But I have to say, it was one of the best experiences I've ever had. The people I got to know there were so wonderful, like Mary who sold me Freddy Kreuger soap! I'm a big soap/skincare junkie when I'm not doing my horror stuff, and I told her that I work for a soap company and she loves the company I work for, so I figured how could I not try out her soap too?!
The networking was awesome, and hopefully, soon, there will be more members of the horror family and we'll expand!

Were any of you at MonsterMania?! Let me know if you saw me there!!

Dirt Lullabies: A Novel Review!

I had the privilege of reading the new novel by author Jeremy Megargee, Dirt Lullabies.
Honestly, the opportunity came about in a pretty cool way...we've been following each other on Instagram for some time, when suddenly, a message appeared! Jeremy asked me to read Dirt Lullabies and I agreed, hence where we are now!

Let me tell you, guys, I ripped through this book. 5 hours, and I was finished with the whole thing. It was a snowy day here in New York (I'm writing this on Thursday night, but you guys will see this on Tuesday) so I had a little time on my hands to sit down and truly get involved in a book.
Well, I didn't exactly expect that I would be so immersed in this book that I would finish it in one sitting. I also didn't know I could sit still for 5 hours.

Let me give you a quick synopsis:
Roman Merrick lives in West Virginia with his parents, and the family is just barely scraping by. He discovers a crack in the ground in the root cellar beneath his home that could just be the answer to all of his family's problems...when a melodic voice calling itself M drifts up from the crack promising a way out, Roman is faced with a life-altering decision.

I KNOW, even the synopsis is awesome. The story is very original, and I found myself slightly crushing on the antagonist, M, which is pretty disturbing. I mean, you're going to have to read it to find out why.

It's gory, it's gripping, it doesn't let you go, and I was turning pages like a madwoman. I probably looked insane reading it. Good thing I was curled up in a ball under the blanket to read it during this insane weather. The characters are awesome and memorable, and I absolutely love their stories. It just feels so complete- you don't finish reading with any questions like "wait why did that happen?" or "who was that?" or anything like that, it's completely full-circle and cohesive, which is nice. Also, there may or may not be an awesome goth girl that reminds me a lot of myself.....she's my favorite.

I honestly don't have enough good things to say about this novel. I loved every second of reading it and I am so honored to have been asked to give it a read. If you're looking for a novel to really grab your attention, Dirt Lullabies is absolutely a great place to start. Also, you'll be supporting Indie writers, which is even more awesome, because their talent needs to be exposed!

Let me know if you decide to read Dirt Lullabies, you're really missing out until you do!!

MonsterMania Convention: I'm So Excited!

In true Taylor fashion, I waited until the last minute to book my tickets to MonsterMania Con in New Jersey. About a week ago, my other half snagged us tickets, and I was so thrilled to check the list of guests going!
Daveigh Chase, who I'm super excited about, is going to be there, and you guys probably know her as Samara from The Ring.
You have like half of the people from the Saw franchise.
Adam Green will be there (just weeks after I watched Digging Up the Marrow!) and he'll be supporting charities supporting Yorkie rescues! For those of you that know me well, you know that I work with LUSH Cosmetics and I'm obsessed with all things cruelty-free.
Kane Hodder will be there, who is not only one of the actors that played Jason in the Friday the 13th franchise...he's also a fellow paranormal investigator!

But then...
We continue scrolling and...what is this? Wait, repeat that?
JOHN CARROLL LYNCH. TWISTY THE CLOWN. WHAT?! I almost cried and died and threw up all at the same time. That's where my excitement really kicked in.
I'm totally going to have him sign my stuffed Twisty that I had made for me.

I attended Bizarre AC last year, and I plan on going back this year (when they release a date), but until then, I'm beyond thrilled to be going to this con! I'm just trying to decide if I want to dress up...the plan would be a female Pennywise the Clown.

This was a super short post, but I'm trying to get everything together for the 13th! I hope to see some of you horror ghoulies there, after all, it will be Friday the 13th...

American Horror Story: Hotel?

Lady Gaga just recently posted this video to her Twitter:
It created quite a buzz amongst the horror community. How will she do? Wait, when was the theme of season 5 released? Will Twisty be in it? (okay, that last one is just me dreaming...)

Gaga is supposed to star in the season, although I'm hoping they'll cut the musical numbers that they've been known to do throughout the seasons. With Gaga in the mix, I have a feeling they're going to force a million more musical numbers on us, but we'll see...

There have been numerous quotes released saying that season 5 is going to be a reinvention, of sorts. There were many mixed feelings about AHS: Freakshow based on the rushed story and gorgeous characters meeting a bitter end very abruptly. I welcome this change with open arms.

I hope they draw some inspiration from The Shining, because when we think of scary hotels, what else do us horror fans think of? I am hoping, though, that they bring a really original spin to the idea of haunted hotels, maybe bringing in some history of haunted hotels in the US. Haunted places are my favorite.

Bring on the weirdness. Is it October yet?!

Poltergeist Remake...I'm Grossly Excited

I remember watching the original Poltergeist at my 10th birthday party in my basement with all of my best friends. We were all so terrified that a tree was going to come crashing through the window to eat us that none of us went to sleep that night. I also still frequently find myself having weird, nightmarish fears of the guy in the bathroom ripping his face off...so this begs the question: how excited are you for the remake coming out this year?! I'm so excited that I need to go into the liiiight...hehe...heh...

Producer Sam Raimi is probably an awesome pick to be on-board for this film, that's one of the things I'm most excited about. Some of his notable credits are the Evil Dead "remake" from 2013 (which holds a special place in my heart, because it was one of the first times I was actually dragged to a horror film I thought I'd be too scared to see, and it was also one of my first dates with my now-boyfriend-of-two-years), The Grudge, and Drag Me to Hell. Um, yes. His horror expertise is a welcomed credit on the roster for me.

Then, there's the up-to-date visual effects. The original Poltergeist is terrifying in it's own way, mostly because of the concept. You have an angry bunch of spirits throwing things around your house and sucking your daughter into the television. Your son gets swallowed by a tree. You have a small woman with an awful voice running around your house talking to your daughter that you can't see. If you haven't seen the original Poltergeist, it's like having not seen the original Evil Dead. It's a classic, and while it's not necessarily the best visual effects in the world, it still freaks you the hell out. That's what I'm looking forward to with Poltergeist: the story will never, ever be dated. It can only go up from here.

The only concern I think I have is them messing with the story. There is something about Carolanne and her family that was so charming and lovable, that you root for them obsessively the whole time. I was thrown off when I watched the trailer and the oldest daughter is on Facebook when her phone goes down. Meh. I know it isn't the 80s, but can't we pretend that it is? Also, they don't have little Zelda Rubinstein running around the house with that tiny voice of hers yelling "go into the light", which is also slightly disappointing.

But all in all, I can't wait until this one comes out! I think 2015 is going to be a year where horror reinvents itself, creating a new outlook on the genre. Except for that awful Unfriended movie. We're just going to pretend that doesn't happen. Cool? Cool.

Love you, my little ghosts and ghouls.

What It Means to be a Horror Fan

This is a super sappy post, I'm just warning you guys. There are a lot of things that have occurred to me over the last few months especially, but since I've truly become a part of the horror community.

This whole community has become a lifestyle. The idea that these twisted, terrifying things that exist in the world really bring a group of people together is...well, disturbing, but also so sobering, because I always thought I was the only person in the world who had a crush on Edward Scissorhands at 5 years old, or I was the only one who was sneaking out of the house to watch The Exorcist because my mom wouldn't let me when I was 9.

I have been welcomed into this community with nothing but open arms from everyone. The people I have met have been some of the most interesting humans I've ever had the pleasure of coming in contact with, from all different backgrounds.

So what does it mean to be a horror fan?
You're sick and twisted, and it's awesome.
You enjoy blood, gore, and the occasional beheading.
You go about your life as a normal person (which most people are surprised by, we don't go home and turn into Jeffrey Dahmer), you have a life, you have friends.
You live on the adrenaline of being terrified.
You think that the term "creepy" is a positive.
You're probably one of the coolest people in the world.
You defy the norm.

There are so many more things I could add to this list. To be honest, I never believed that I would fit in anywhere as a kid. I was bullied for years about how I looked, how I dressed, and what I liked. I was told by what was probably hundreds of people that I would never be able to go anywhere with the way I lived my life.

And instead, I grew up trying to suppress my love for the weird. It wasn't until right before I turned 20 that I found my love again, and that rush of being terrified but being so intrigued and wanting to be there left me feeling almost lost. I told myself I couldn't hold the love back anymore, and so I let it flow.

Here I am about 2 years later with a horror collection that's slowly engulfing my entire bedroom, relationships with some of the most beautiful people in life and on Instagram, and I am so proud to call myself a horror fan.

I take a few hours out of my day every day to post here, post on Moviepilot, make sure I watch films that are classic, or getting reviews (good or bad) so that I can tell you guys how I feel about them, and I am eternally grateful that you all support me the way you do. I think about my horror family every single day and how they've embraced me as one of the fellow weirdos.

It's not a hobby, it's not something we do in our free time, it's a lifestyle. There's no other word for it. When you're truly a horror fan, it's your life. I'm willing to be weird forever, and I can't wait to love every second of it.

Sincerely, truly, deeply, from the bottom of my heart, I love you all.
Until next time, while I'm still trying to get that HorrorBlock video up. -sigh-
